New-release wines: 23 August 2014
New-release wines continue to be of exceptional quality, which is good news for consumers who can select with confidence.
2013 Stoneleigh Rapaura Series Pinot Gris
A part of Marlborough, called Rapaura by early Maori, became known by European settlers as Strugglers Flat because the infertility of the soil made farming difficult. It's great for grapes though. This is a pinot gris with oomph, and flavours of poached pear, apple strudel, quince and a touch of lanolin. A clever, interesting wine.
2012 Jules Taylor OTQ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
OTQ stands for On The Quiet. This is made from specially selected premium grapes from a small parcel of land in the Spring Creek sub-region of Marlborough. Fermented and aged in old French oak barrels, it has a lovely fusion of citrus peel, passionfruit, honeysuckle and peaches. A nutty aftertaste adds a layer of complexity to the wine that would go well with white fish, veal goat's cheese or creamy pasta.
2010 Turanga Creek Notre Terroir Merlot-Malbec
Who knew that Whitford, south of Auckland, is home to a certified organic and bio-dynamic winery from which veteran winemaker Rod McDonald produces a range of single vineyard organic wines? Merlot-malbec is not a common red grape blend but one I've always enjoyed. Expect big, ripe, red black berries with a hint of smokiness and soft, silky tannins. Try with any red meat dish.
