Reader recipe FAQs
Our reader recipe section is where you get to add your own recipes. You will need to become a registered user on Bite.co.nz and once logged in, you can upload and share your recipes, plus make comments and offer tips to others in the Bite.co.nz community. Think you've got a good recipe? Enter it into one of the reader recipe competitions we run regularly.
Register and set up a profile
As a registered user of Bite.co.nz, we encourage you to create a profile of yourself. Once registered and logged in, click on the my bite button on the top of the page to create your profile and upload your photo (avatar). Your profile is a place where you tell us more about yourself including your blog, website or social media pages. Don’t want a public profile? That’s okay too – leave the Make my profile public box unchecked. You can still submit recipes, comment and share with others.

Click on the green register now button and either follow the instructions to create an account or use your existing Facebook or Google+ accounts.
What is the reader recipe section?
The reader recipe section is a place where you can add and share your much-loved original recipes and talk food with other members of the bite.co.nz community, as well as your friends and family.
What can I do in the reader recipe section?
- Add a profile where you can tell us more about yourself including your blog, website or social media page (such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc)
- Upload your own recipes with photos that you’ve taken of your dish
- View other readers' recipes and make comments
- Compile collections of your own recipes, other people's recipes and your Bite favourites
Can anyone see my profile?
You can choose to keep your profile public or private. To change your privacy settings, log in and click on the my bite button in the top right corner, go to the profile tab, and scroll down to the preferences section.
When your profile is set to public, people can see your avatar (picture), your username and the blurb that you wrote about yourself. They will also see your favourited recipes, recipes you’ve created and any collections you’ve made. They will not see any private details.
Can anyone add a recipe to the reader recipe section?
You have to be registered on Bite.co.nz to add a recipe. If you are not registered, click on the register button on the top right of the page. Once you are registered and logged in, go to the reader recipe form, to enter the recipe.
How do I add a recipe?
Go to the reader recipe form or access it by clicking on recipes in the top left of every page. Click on the green button that says add your own recipe. You can also find this button in your profile page, under own recipes.
You’ll be asked to enter the recipe name, a short description, the ingredients and instructions as well as some useful information such as how many serves or how much the recipe makes. You can also add a picture of your dish - try and upload a photo after you’ve given your recipe a description - there’s nothing like a photo to show off your talents.
Do I have to upload an image of my recipe?
We encourage you to upload an image (everybody loves looking at food pics!), but it is not essential.
How do I upload an image of my recipe?
Once you have taken a photo of your finished dish, save it to your computer. When you are loading your recipe, click the upload button and select the image you have saved to your computer. Our system will do all the work from there.
What happens after I load my recipe?
Your recipe will be tagged with categories such as Main Ingredient, Occasion, World Food, Meals and Courses and Season. If you haven’t uploaded an image, we’ll add a generic image too. You will receive an email within 2-3 working days to advise that your recipe has been approved and published. This email will contain a link to your recipe so you can share it.
What if I make a mistake loading the recipe?
While there is no way to edit a recipe once live, that functionality will be available soon. In the meantime you will need to add the recipe again, or drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
How do I favourite (or save) a recipe?
When you click on a recipe page, look out for a red heart and you’ll find the add to favourites button. When you click this, the recipe will be automatically saved to your profile page, under all favourites. If it is a recipe you’ve already favourited, it will say favourited. You can select a collection you’ve already made or create a new one.
How do I find the recipes I’ve saved?
You can access all your saved recipes and collections by clicking the ‘my bite’ icon on the top right hand corner.
What are recipe collections?
Recipe collections are an exciting feature of bite.co.nz. You can browse through collections that have been created by the team or you can create your own – the perfect way to save your recipes in an organised way. Plan your meals for a week, and add the ingredients to your shopping list and you’re sorted when you go to the supermarket. You can group similar recipes together – whether they are your own recipes, another reader’s recipes or one from bite.co.nz.
How do I make a recipe collection?
There are two ways of doing this:
- From a recipe page - hover over the Add to Favourites button. It will bring up a box with add to a collection. Create the collection by typing in a name for this new collection, and then clicking on the + button to add the recipe.
- Go to your profile and click on the collections tab. Click on the green button that says create new collection. Add the name of your collection to whatever you want – weekday meals, weekend brunch, chocolate, vegan and so on. You can create as many collections as you like.
Where can I find my favourite recipes?
You need to be logged in to view your profile page. Once you’ve logged in, click on the My bite button on the top right of every page to access your profile page, then click on all favourites.
Why can’t I find my profile page?

How do I add a new recipe to my own collections?
When you are on a recipe page, hover over the Add to Favourites button. It will bring up a box with add to a collection. You can choose to add this recipe to an existing collection if you’ve already created one. Or you can create a new collection by typing in the name of your new collection. Click on the + button to add the recipe.
How do I edit my recipe?
We currently do not have this feature, but we’re working on it. If you do need to change your recipe you can email email@example.com.
Do my own recipes, favourited recipes and own collections have to be public?
When adding your own recipe you are granting NZME. Limited (publisher of Bite) the rights to publish your recipe, and your recipe will be made public. You can however keep your profile private so your profile, favourites and collections remain unpublished. These settings are within the profile area on My bite.

How do I ask a question or make comment on a reader’s recipe?
This is the same process for recipes on bite.co.nz. So once you are logged in, you’ll be able to comment on recipes by typing in the space provided at the bottom of every recipe page, and then click the green comment button.
How do I edit my comments?
You can’t right now, but we are working on this feature.
How do I find community (or reader) recipes?
Hover over the ‘recipes’ tab at the top of the page and the dropdown menu includes ‘reader recipes’. Click on this to see all of the community recipes.
How do I search recipes of a cook I admire?
You can add recipe search term, such as spaghetti, in the search box at the top of the site. Then you can refine your search by scrolling down and clicking on the name of the cook whose recipes you’d like to see.
Do the reader recipes get checked?
No, the recipes added by readers are not checked by the Bite team. The accuracy and quality of the recipes are the responsibility of the reader submitting the recipe.
How do I print a recipe?
You will find the print this recipe button below the image of the recipe.
By submitting your recipe to bite.co.nz you are granting NZME Limited (publisher of Bite) full rights to publish your recipe. You can keep all of your profile information private by going to the settings within the profile area on My bite.
What do I do if I need help from the Bite team?
Just email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll respond to your query as soon as we can.
